The Edge was built with capabilities to map proprietary device communications onto standard, grid-friendly protocols, without mandatory proprietary layers in between. We plan to continually add mappings as nascent grid standards coalesce.

Modbus and serial device mappings work on the Edge today. Grid open standards below are early-stage, with feasibility testing done and device-side mappings landing as pilot devices reach the field. We commit to at least one open standard natively on each device.

Global policy is moving toward smart, interoperable energy devices that are secure by design.
- In the UK, the DESNZ / Elexon Smart Secure Electricity Systems programme expects load control licence applications from late 2026, with the licence in force by the end of 2027.
- PAS 1878:2026, published in April 2026, tightens the requirements for energy smart appliances, including a dedicated cyber security clause.
- The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan puts the clean flexible capacity the grid could need by 2030 at up to 66 GW, against 24 GW in 2023.
Direction of travel is clear and WattStack is actively leading in many of these regulatory and standards groups.
