What is WattStack?

Your heat pump, hot water cylinder, home battery or EV charger has a small WattStack communications module inside it, called an Edge, fitted by the company that made the device. In some homes it sits in a small WattStack Hub fitted alongside the device instead.

It's there to make your device smarter and easier to live with. See what the device is doing, control it from your phone or computer, and cut what it costs to run by moving its energy use to cheaper hours.

What it does for you.

  • Lets you see what your device is doing

The WattStack Edge communications module, plus the services behind it, connect your device securely to the internet. Together they let you see how your device is running, what it is using and what it has been doing, and control it from your phone or computer, wherever you are.

  • Keeps you in control

You choose how your device runs, and it does what you have told it to. You can see what is happening and why, and change it whenever you want. Underneath all of that, the safety limits your device maker set up are always obeyed, no matter what the grid (or anyone else) asks for.

  • Moves your energy use to cheaper hours

The grid is the nation's electricity system. Because WattStack talks to both the grid and your device in a way they both understand, the App can run your device smartly at the times when electricity is cheaper. A time-of-use tariff will really pay off here if you aren't on one already. And when the grid pays homes to use a little more power, or a little less, your device can earn a share of that, if you choose to opt in.

Who we are.

WattStack is a UK technology company. We sell communications modules and software to the companies that make energy devices, and to the organisations that run them. The manufacturer or operator of your device has built our Edge board into the product you are using, similar to the way a car manufacturer buys in tyres as a component. They pay us for the products and the services we provide, and we also offer device owners extra services as paid add-ons.

Expert user friendly

Your device will not be locked into our cloud.

If you run your own home automation, or you would rather nothing left the house, your device will not have to depend on WattStack's cloud. The Edge builds on open standards, so you will be able to reach the device directly on your network. Everything you need to run the device is also available over a documented public REST API, so it can be opened to third-party software you choose. Open standards and interoperability are commitments we have designed our company around.

Open standards will reach devices as we roll out with manufacturers, and will cover monitoring and control. There's no suitable open standard for firmware updates or support yet, so those still need a cloud service, though we plan to open that up too. The public API is open today to companies building on the stack, and we have committed to a version scoped to individual accounts, built on the same technology.

Your questions, answered.

What does it cost me?
The WattStack App is free to use, and is fully featured for most users. You can see what your device is doing, control it, and have it run when energy is cheaper. There is also a paid tier, Premium, at £3 a month. Both versions run your device automatically. The paid one is better at it, finding cheaper hours the free version would miss, and it gives you more ways to set when your device runs and a longer record of what it has done. If you choose to help the grid, the value your device earns is shared with you, and we never charge you to take part.
Will it make changes to my device by itself?
Only the changes you have asked for. Tell it exactly what to do, such as only run between midnight and five. Or tell it what matters most to you and let it work out the rest. Ask for the lowest running cost and it automatically moves energy use to the cheapest hours it can find. Ask for it to be ready when you need it and it will put that first, still at the best price it can manage. Either way you see what is happening and why, and you can override at any time. Helping the grid is off until you switch it on, and your device maker's own safety limits sit underneath all of it, whatever else is going on.
Who can see my data?
Your device sends readings to our cloud, covering how much energy it is using, how well it is running, and its status. Device readings are separated from your personal data and we use them to run your device and control the features you've switched on. Your device maker sees support information, so they can help when something goes wrong. Your energy supplier sees nothing unless you connect them yourself, for example by linking your tariff so the App knows your prices, or by joining one of the schemes that pay for grid help. We don't sell your data. It is held securely under UK GDPR, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.
Can I turn it off?
Yes, and connecting it is your choice in the first place. The Edge reaches our cloud over your home internet, so a device you have not put on your network sends nothing, and one you take off it stops. Either way it will carry on heating, charging or storing as it did before, using the settings in its memory. What you give up is anything that needs the internet, such as the App, control from other software, and the management and support services that keep it up to date. As open standards arrive on devices you will be able to monitor and control your device directly, without going through us at all, if that's what you want.
Why does the app have my device maker's name on it?
Some manufacturers put their own name and branding on the WattStack App, and others leave ours on it. Either way it is the same app, built and run by WattStack, with the same privacy rules. If you are not sure which one you have, your device maker or installer can tell you, or it may be in your device's documentation.
